Where It All Began

Our story began with James “Jim” Cheng, an engineer and certified prosthetist and orthotist whose career started in the 1970s. With an educational background in engineering, physiotherapy, biomechanics, and prosthetics and orthotics, including studies in Hong Kong and at New York University, Jim brought a unique combination of technical knowledge and clinical expertise to patient care.

After settling in London, Ontario, in 1976, Jim established Hamilton Prosthetics & Orthotics at 450 Hamilton Road in 1988, with a commitment to helping people regain mobility, independence, and confidence.

What began as a small family practice has grown into one of Southwestern Ontario’s most trusted names in prosthetic and orthotic care, earning that reputation through decades of clinical expertise, personalized service, and lasting relationships with patients, families, and healthcare professionals throughout the region.

Two Generations. One Shared Commitment.

Growing up around the family business, Jim’s daughter Shirley witnessed firsthand the difference compassionate, skilled care could make in someone’s life.

Inspired by her father’s dedication, Shirley followed in his footsteps and became a Canadian Certified Prosthetist and Orthotist.

Today, Jim and Shirley work side by side, combining more than five decades of experience with modern clinical expertise and advanced prosthetic technologies.

Together, they continue to build on the values that started it all: treating every patient as an individual and helping them achieve what matters most in their everyday lives.

Experience Meets Innovation

Prosthetic and orthotic care has come a long way since 1988, and so have we. From traditional craftsmanship and custom fabricated devices to advanced microprocessor knees and myoelectric prosthetic systems, we combine proven clinical experience with today’s technology to develop solutions tailored to each patient’s needs.

We also work closely with physicians, therapists, and rehabilitation teams throughout Southwestern Ontario, including Parkwood Institute and Thames Valley Children’s Centre, to support coordinated, patient centred care.

Still Family Owned. Still Putting People First.

Nearly four decades later, we’re proud to remain at our original Hamilton Road location, independently owned and operated by the family that started it all. We’ve had the privilege of caring for generations of patients and families, sharing in their challenges, achievements, and milestones along the way.

While technology continues to evolve, our commitment remains unchanged: to listen, to care, and to help people move forward with confidence.

Family owned. Independent. Proudly serving Southwestern Ontario since 1988.
